Tech lust: I want an iPhone! Now!

Digg It!
I have resisted all smartphones and PDAs up to now. Blackberry was too corporate. Treo seemed too crappy and poorly integrated with the rest of my life. Motorola...well I never really took it seriously. And I really hate the whole structure of being locked into a mobile provider's network, content and the exorbitant data pricing in Canada. Now Apple's iPhone. Dsc 0184 Dsc 0187 Dsc 0186 Dsc 0210 Dsc 0217 How I lust for this thing. Impossibly thin. iPod, phone and internet communicator. Fantastic form factor and absolutely breakthrough user interaction. Thin, widescreen, gorgeous. WiFi, GSM, Bluetooth, EDGE. Integrated with ITunes content. Partnered with Google and Yahoo. A real web browser experience. Running OS X. A real computer. $599 USD for 8GB model. It won't be introduced until June in the US in partnership with Cingular. How much longer before a Canadian can get one? I am panting in breathless anticipation.

But will you be cursing it when it’s -30 and you’ve got to take your gloves off to use it? :)

I’ll be keen to see how it survives a drop too…

I share this particular case of gadget lust with you Mark, along with about 3billion other people I suspect.

I actually have a Treo (which is ok, but definitely not great). But if the iPhone is half as good as it looks I’ll be in line for the bandwagon as soon as it hits Canadian stores.

As a wifi geek, I’m particularly interested in the possibilities the iPhone opens up for location specific, wifi based apps. This is far more interesting in my eyes than 3g stuff, as the wifi spectrum is unlicensed there are none of the barriers to entry that come with billion dollar spectrum license deals and trans-national telecoms giants.

    Good questions Ryan.

Patrick – exactly what I was thinking. WT should approach Apple for a pre-release version for early location-based wifi experiments. :)

And imagine how such a device in a ubiquitous wifi-saturated community changes things so completely.

If it only works in the US, I’d consider moving until it’s available here! ;-)

Probably the same time. Not surprisingly, given they’re the only GSM game left in Canada, it looks like Rogers will be offering the iPhone.

I too am a big fan of, and will be lusting for, the iPhone. That being said, take a look at the feature set for RIM’s 8800. No stylin’ interface but a pretty delicious little feature list, including GPS. And its going to go for about $250, rumour has it – about a third of the expected $ of the iPhone. And coming out late April. Tempting.
